Coke Sampling Method Overview

Coke is formed from bituminous coal through high-temperature coking. In the article How Is Coal Sample Processed, we introduce the types of coal and the sampling procedures. Under normal conditions, the bituminous coal will be heated to 950-1050 ℃ under the condition of air isolating. After the stage of drying, pyrolysis, melting, bonding, solidifying and constriction, the coke will be finally made. It is usually divided into metallurgical coke (including blast furnace coke, casting coke and ferroalloy coke), gasification coke and calcium carbide coke. Coke is mainly used for blast furnace ironmaking and blast furnace smelting for non-ferrous metals.

Coke is used instead of charcoal in ironmaking blast furnace, which lays a foundation for the large-scale of the blast furnace. At the same time, it is a milestone in the history of metallurgy. In order to achieve better technical and economic indicators during the operation of the blast furnace, the coke must have the proper chemical and physical properties, including the thermal properties of the smelting process. It is used not only for iron making and nonferrous metal metallurgy but also for casting, chemical industry, calcium carbide and ferroalloy. Their quality requirements are different. For example, the coke used for gasification and chemical industry is not strict in strength, but it requires good reactivity and high ash melting point. Coke used for calcium carbide production calls for increasing the fixed carbon content as much as possible.

Obviously, it is very important to test the quality and performance of coke before putting into production in order to improve the production efficiency. How to get the most representative sample and what method should we need are seemly two very important questions for us. So next, we will talk about that in details.

Coke Sampling Method

According to the state of the raw material, we can divide the coke sampling method into moving coke stream sampling and stationary coke sampling.

Moving Coke Stream Sampling Method

Moving coke stream sampling is a mechanized sampling method on the conveyor belt. When we are sampling, a complete coke flow cross section should be taken as a gross sample, and it should be taken from the coke flow with uniform flow rate and load in order to decrease the bias. Under this method, we usually adopt the cross belt sampling system. This system from TopSampler is divided into two-stage sampling system and three-stage sampling system. In accordance with the sampling position, we divide it into head cross belt sampling system and central cross belt sampling system.

Central Cross Belt Sampling System

The head belt sampler is mainly used in head cross belt sampling system and the central belt sampler used in the central cross belt sampling system. The appearance, installation position and sampling method of the two machines are different.

Appearance: The shape and structure of the head belt sampler and middle belt sampler are completely different. The head belt sampler has a wider body. It is more like a cube.

Installation: The head belt sampler is installed in the head of the belt conveyor and the central belt sampler is used in the middle of the belt conveyor. The belt went through their body.

Sampling method: The head belt sampler samples by the way of collecting material. The hopper rotates according to the predetermined program, and when it is rotated to the appropriate position, the material is dropped to the sampling hopper by the way of collection. The central belt sampler samples according to the rotate of the sampling head, scraping the material on the belt from the cross-section, while, both of them are controlled by the PLC automatic control system. It is easy to operate.

Stationary Coke Sampling Method

The stationary coke sampling method is mainly adopted in truck, railcar and coke vessel. In this method, there are bridge sampling machine and cantilever sampling machine, two kinds of machines available. The auger sampling system for truck and auger sampling system for railcar produced by TopSampler are bridge sampling system. When the machine is sampling, the auger rotates downward and the coke sample enters the auger. When the auger drops to the bottom, one sampling is completed. The sampling points are chosen by the PLC controlled system randomly and automatically. XDCY is a kind of automatic sampling control system for the railcar and truck. The picture shows the single lane sampling system with a travel lane. This type also has the single lane with double travel lanes and double lanes auger sampling system. You can get more details on what is auger sampling system. And if you are interested in our machines, we can customize according to your requirements.
